How to configure and attach an internet gateway for use with Elastic Load Balancing?

The solution to this particular query involves different steps. Let’s take a closer look:

Create an Internet Gateway & Then Attach it to the VPC

  1. First, go to https://console.aws.amazon.com/vpc/ and open the Amazon VPC console.
  2. Then head to the navigation pane and choose Internet Gateways, followed by Create internet gateway.
  3. After that, name the internet gateway.
  4. Then either add or remove a tag.
    • If you pick Add Tag, enter the key name for Key and key value for Value.
    • If you prefer to remove a tag, choose Remove on the right side of the tag’s Value and Key.
  5. Then pick Create internet gateway.
  6. Choose the internet gateway created just now and pick Actions, Attach to VPC.
  7. After that, choose VPC from the list, followed by Attach internet gateway.

Then route traffic to and from the internet by configuring the internet gateway.

Create A Custom Route Table

  1. Head to https://console.aws.amazon.com/vpc/ and open the Amazon VPC console.
  2. Then choose Route Tables followed by Create route table from the navigation pane.
  3. Next, name the route table, select the VPS and choose Create route table in the dialog box.
  4. After that, choose the custom route table created just now.
  5. Then pick Edit routes, Add route in the Routes tab, and the following routes. We recommend choosing Save changes once you are done.
    • Specify 0.0.0.0/0 for iPv4 traffic in the Destination box. Also, choose the internet gateway ID from the Target list.
    • Specify : : /0 for IPv6 in the Destination box and choose check box for the subnet, followed by Save.
  1. Pick Edit subnet associations from the Subnet associations tab and choose the check box for the subnet. Remember to finally choose Save associations.

Confirm Security Groups and ACL List

In order to allow traffic to and from the internet, our Support Techs recommend confirming VPC’s security groups as well as network access control list ACL.

Confirm Public IP Address or Attached Elastic IP Address

Then ensure that the instances that are responsible for routing traffic through the internet gateway have an attached Elastic IP address or a public IP address.

Select an Internet-Facing Load Balancer

Finally, select an Internet-facing load balancer in case you have created a new Elastic Load Balancer.
